Another half day back country fishing charter.

It is always a pleasure when people recommend you. It is rewarding when people so appreciate the effort you have spent to show them  a good time that they send others to fish with you. Keith and Teresa were recommended to fish me. They Wanted to have some fish for dinner and to pull on something really big. I was able to accommodate on both counts. We started out drifting the basins in the beautiful Key West back country. We were able to catch a few nice speckled trout and mangrove snappers for their dinner as well as some nice jacks and lady fish for shark bait. I then anchored

Windy days fishing the flat in Key West.

Daryl and Tina had so much fun fishing with me on Saturday that they booked me again for Tuesday. The wind was up but it is always calm in the back country. We found our way into the basins and drifted around and caught a few jacks and lady fish for bait before we went to a channel to fish for sharks. We  anchored up in the current butterflied a bonito to hang off the back of the boat to call them up. We put out a couple of nice fresh fish heads for bait and waited for a bite. It wasn’t long before we had a nice lemon

Roxanne, Ruth, and Deb decided they wanted to do afternoon half day charter. We went into the backcountry and spent the first half of the trip drifting around in the basins catching lots of lady fish as well as a few Jacks and trout. There was lots of action for the ladies and they were sure busy. We kept the jacks and lady fish for bait for shark fishing. We anchored up in a channel and hung a bonito off the back of the boat to call them in. Each of the girls caught a big lemon ranging from eighty to one hundred and fifty pound. They fought them like champions.

A great half day charter with tarpon and shark.

Don and Steve did a half day charter. We left the dock on a gorgeous flat calm morning. Even though it is not tarpon season there are still a few spots where there are some resident tarpon and the conditions were perfect so we anchored up and put our baits out to see if we could get one to play. It didn’t take long before we had a nice fifty pounder on, which is pretty bi for this time of year. We had to let go of the anchor and chase it down. It was a great fight. We went back to the anchor and tried get another. We soon

Baby tarpon.

As the summer of 2013 fades into the past the Key West weather still feels like summer. The tarpon have migrated to wherever they go for the winter and we are left with a few resident fish and small fish that are not yet mature enough to make the migration. Bill and Delores chartered the boat for a morning half. We pulled up to the spot and began to chum. It didn’t take long before we had a nice little fish jumping behind the boat. A tarpon of any size is an awesome fish to catch. The fish put on a great show jumping and pulling line. Before the trip

Awesome tarpon and shark fishing charter.

Jason and Sarah were in Key West to celebrate their honeymoon. Jason is an avid fisherman and really wanted to catch a tarpon and a shark. We left the dock as the sun was just peeking over the horizon. The water was absolutely flat calm. There were just a few clouds in the sky, enough to catch golden first light of the day. It was the type of morning where I am just in awe of the place I live and the way I am able to make a living. We pulled the pinfish traps and added it to the bait I already had in the well and went to

Key West shark fishing is red hot.

Janet and Kevin were married in Key West a few years and back an like to celebrate their anniversary here every year. They are both avid runners and come this week in spite of having to miss one of their favorite races. This is the second year they have decided to fish with me. We started out by anchoring up and looking for a tarpon. There are fewer and fewer tarpon every day as they have begun their annual migration out of the Keys. There are still a few resident fish left as well as some that have not yet migrated but they are getting harder and harder to find.

Key West sharks biting like crazy!

I had a two boat charter with my good friend John. We Pulled our pinfish traps and set up for tarpon during the last hour of incoming tide. We caught a couple bonnet head sharks (the hammerheads little cousin) and pulled the hook on a tarpon along with a couple mystery bites. Once the tide slowed down we decided to go to the west where the tide was just beginning to come in and try to catch a shark. We anchored up and hung a bonito off the back of the boat put out a couple chunks for bait. It didn’t take long for us to hook up with a

Another great week of Key West Tarpon and Shark fishing.

The Key west weather has finally been pretty spectacular over the last week. While it has been pretty hot on the island once you get out on the water the temperature has been great, and all the rain we have had is finally gone. The tarpon have been continuing to bite, and the sharks are teeming in the back country. Young and old alike have battling big fish in calm water. I truly am lucky have been able to position myself in this wonderful tropical paradise meeting new people and giving them a memory that they will cherish for the rest of their lives. I really am truly blessed. Come

Well into July and the Key West tarpon bite is still red hot.

Stewart and Alton decided last minute that it would be fun to go tarpon fishing. So they booked me in the morning and we went out at about 11:00 am. Not exactly the best time of day to begin a trip. I am an avid believer of starting early in the morning. In spite of that we went and pulled my traps and loaded with lots of live bait we anchored the boat in the Key West harbor and there were tarpon rolling all around the boat. We put a bait on the hook and cast it out. We had just put a bait on the second hook when a

Tarpon and Shark in Key West half day fishing charter

Jeff and his two sons Hunter and Tanner booked a half day fishing charter. They wanted to go fro tarpon and shark. We started out by setting up in the harbor for tarpon. We put out a couple of live baits and I began chunking up the pinfish. The first bite was a little nurse shark that hunter took care of himself. Soon after that our efforts were rewarded with a big tarpon on the end of the line. The boys took turns fighting the monster tarpon fish. After the boys tag teamed for nearly an hour we got the release. The boys then decided that they wanted to run

Almost July and the tarpon bite remains red hot!

Cody and Brielle got married on Saturday. Sunday they hopped a plane to south Florida. Cody had always wanted to catch a tarpon and so the only plans they made for their honeymoon was the six hour charter for Tuesday morning. Any wife who lets you fish on your honeymoon is well picked and certainly a keeper. We pulled the traps and were loaded with enough bait fro several trips. We proceeded to look around for rolling tarpon. We checked out several channels without seeing a single rolling fish or so much as a mark on the bottom machine. We went into the area where the sailboats moor to continue

A Great Half-Day Charter

I got a phone call one evening and on the other end of the line is Dave. Dave tells me that he is an avid fisherman from Alaska. Dave and Jim came to the Keys for the first time and spent five full days fishing for tarpon on fly. They met with limited success, boating one and getting leader on another. The found me on Google and booked me for a half day charter in the morning. We pulled my traps and filled the live well up with pin fish and set up to wait for a tarpon to grab the bait. We were quickly rewarded with a bite. The

Big tarpon in Key West

May was difficult. The weather which is usually calm and warm was not cooperative. We had unseasonably cool weather and lots of wind. The tarpon fishing was difficult at times too. What the fish made lacked in numbers they made up for in size. There have been lots of fish over a hundred pounds. Which of course means long hard fought battles. There have been many fights over an hour and a couple over two hours.

Key West Tarpon fishing heats up

Tommy has been fishing with since my offshore days. His son-in-law caught my personal best dolphin a few years back, a sixty six pound monster.  He and Doug went out with me late in the summer last year and we caught a couple small tarpon before going into the back country and catching ladyfish jacks and trout. They wanted to know the best time to get large tarpon. I told the May was usually really good. They came back this May and we went out to look for a monster. It was a slow day and we went to several places looking for a bite. I offered to go into

Another Bucket List Tarpon!

I received a phone call about a month ago from Derek in Texas. He explained to me that he had found out a year ago that he had cancer. His doctor had just given him the go ahead and he wanted to get to work on his bucket list. Right on the top of his list was a tarpon. OK. No pressure. He did his part he booked during prime time tarpon season. Unfortunately the tarpon have not been cooperating. OK. No pressure. We got out there first thing in the morning pulled the traps and set up began chumming. We got the opportunity to chat as we waited for

Henrik comes to Key West from Norway to catch a tarpon

Henrik is an accomplished carp fisherman in Norway. He so loves carp fishing so much that he developed the popular European bait, “Northern Baits.” Henrik, like most avid fisherman, had tarpon on his bucket list. The weather was questionable but we decided to go and give it a try since the tarpon fishing grounds are very close to the marina we would be able to duck in pretty quickly should it get bad. After pulling the bait traps we anchored up in a channel at the north end of the Key West harbor.  We quickly had a bite on a live bait which didn’t connect. It really got us excited

Great Shark Fishing in Key West Back Country

The tarpon fishing has been tough this week. I fished with Brad and Joe twice this week they brought Beth one day and Stephanie the other. Both trips we pulled the pinfish traps and spent some time looking for the silver kings. We tried all over the harbor but never were able to find the. It would be safe to say that the last couple of weeks the tarpon has been off it should be prime time but the fish have minds of their own and hopefully they will show back up any day. Regardless of that there is plenty of action in the back country. We went in

Sharks are still biting well.

The tarpon are showing up but they are not biting every day. So if we can’t get a bite from the silver king we go into the back country and catch some jacks and anchor up and feed them to the sharks. Big black tip sharks and lemon sharks are biting like bulldogs. These fish will give you a fight like you never imagined. Diversity is definitely one of the hallmarks of Key Wet fishing. If one thing doesn’t work we have many other options at our disposal.

Key West Tarpon Fishing is Heating Up

Leigh and Lou Own a gym on Long Island. They had a hard year. There home was destroyed in Sandy and so they were unable to celebrate Lou’s birthday in December. Leigh decided to surprise him with a trip to Key West for some tarpon fishing. We headed out out first thing in the morning and pulled the pin fish traps and looked for those illusive monsters. We saw a couple fish rolling in demolition and tried a couple drifts as the tide slacked off without a bite. We then tried to anchor up in the sailboats and tried to chum them up as the tide started coming in. Again
